“Stolen Essence” by Terrylene Sacchetti

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 9:41 pm

Oh my gawd! Watch this!

When I first saw this uncaptioned/untranslated poem by Terrylene honoring DeafHope. This poem became viral among the Deaf Community via Facebook. Everyone passed this video to their friends. A lot of positive compliments were given.

Some people asked Terrylene if this poem can be captioned. That is a major challenge, because often times, ASL poems are extremely difficult to be translated to English, because the message tend to be lost in translation.

Terrylene asked me and others how this poem be translated. I was able to offer her some few words. Until now, I saw this translation done by Terrylene with help of two interpreters, Michelle Spence and Kim Nobriga. This translation is SPOT ON! I watched it and it had impacted me even harder! I cannot describe how these simple English words and beauty of American Sign Language can be presented in a way that the message is been seen/heard! I sent an instant message to Terrylene “The words really captured your signs and signs captured words!” This poem is so authentic, raw and emotional! My heart was touched every time I see this poem.

Terrylene, I heard you loud and crystal clear! I am dedicating my blog post to you. You are my heroine!

Readers, please pass this along to everyone.

Warmly,
Amy Cohen Efron

Aww, thanks Amy… Thank you for inspiring me with the first round of my effort to caption this for Non Signers… They are our allies and can help us win 1 million dollars for DeafHope and Deaf Women and children who really need a shelter, a safe home… My special thanks to Michelle Spence and Kim Nobriga!
