Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz is president of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), one of eight colleges within the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Rochester, N.Y., and vice president and dean of RIT, positions he has held since July 1, 2008. Dr. Hurwitz previously served as vice president and dean of RIT—the chief executive and academic officer of the school—beginning in 2003. He has been the dean of NTID from 1998 to the present.
Yes, I think it’s great. I know them personally, since I lived in Rochester, NY for almost 2 decades prior to moving to Indiana 3 years ago. I was good friends with Alan’s son’s wife when she and I were at college (we shared many classes.)
Alan could be seen as “new blood” for Gallaudet; he brings a vast wealth of administration experiences and he has a deep understanding of diversity of deaf people. He will be a nice balance at Gallaudet U., making it more open to more deaf people.
Yes, and he will bring the wealth of University experience to Gallaudet! I look forward for strong partnership between Gallaudet and NTID/RIT and it will make a huge difference for future Deaf America!
I think this will be good for Gallaudet. It needs fresh blood, like Karen said. He’ll set the tone for the university, and due to his experience and knowledge, he’ll be able to do excellent PR and bring in much needed funds.
yup. Alan will definitely keep the diverse within the deaf/hoh. very sorely needed. Keeping the old and welcoming the new! I am very happy with the choice.
I agree with the above commenters… I think the selection of Dr. Hurwitz is a positive thing for Gallaudet, and I look forward to many great things to come!
I was very surprised at the selection of Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz as the next president of Gallaudet University. I thought that Dr. Roslyn Rosen would be selected but now that the Board of Trustees has spoken, so be it.
I join others in giving hearty congratulations to Dr. Hurwitz. He can’t do the job alone. He will need the support from the entire Gallaudet University to improve the standing of the university.
Congratulations to Gallaudet and Dr. Hurwitz! An excellent choice from an awesome slate of candidates. As the only one who has not been with Gallaudet for many decades, I am sure he will bring a fresh horizon to this honorable but staid old institution and bring it into a new epoch of change. Go, Alan! I’ll be disappointed if the campus isn’t thoroughly shaken and stirred to the very last drop!
Hello. I am doing a school project, and was wondering background information about the new President. Like education background (elementary & HS & College, and this might seem like a dumb question but is he deaf?
Thank you!

Great. When they first announced the four selectors, I knew it would go to Dr. Hurwitz from day one.
It’s nice to see that there isn’t any protests thus so far.
Karen M. — “New Blood”, nah, should be “New blue and gold blood”.
We are all cured from the Tylenol.
