Gallaudet Presidential Finalists Will Be Announced SOON!
Hello All,
I subscribed DeafDigest and I read today’s email blast by Barry Strassler. Something that captured my attention…
Holding our breaths, the news we are waiting for will be announced on September 2nd, between 330 pm and 430 pm EST. It is when Benjamin J Soukup, Jr, the chair, Gallaudet board and James Macfadden, the chair, Gallaudet presidential search committee, will reveal the short list of finalists vying to become the next Gallaudet president. Hopefully around that time, the short list announcement will be made on the web site at: http://www.gallaudet.edu/
I went to Gallaudet University’s website and here’s the link to the live webcast which will be aired on September 2, 2009.
Check here.

Let us speculate who will be the finalists…. Hurwitz? Rosen? Weiner? Innes? or someone unknown?
Oh, if you are curious – check out the FAQs about ASL proficiency/fluency requirement, terminal degree clarification, and non-discriminatory statement if Gallaudet hires a person who is not Deaf person.
Check this link here.
I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled for this announcement!
Best,
Amy Cohen Efron

I anticipate an independent Website being formed with all the works just exactly like the last time only better. Naturally, the candidate list will be shorter. Lots of widespread public scrutiny needs to take place. I know there’ll be debates raging. Such a Website shouldn’t be wet-nursing by relay providers or other deaf entities or any other with vested interests meaning no sponsorship, advertising and stuff. Total transparency is what Gallaudet needs and that includes posting the average for their pupils in testing endeavors such as the mainstream SAT/ACT. No bull =)

Wondering why no one talked about Gallaudet and the low number of new enrollment this fall. This is one of many more changes I hope the new president will see through. To ensure that admission to Gallaudet is earned through stringent criterias. It’s not about being deaf, but about what one envision Gallaudet to be in the years to come.

Jane K. Fernandez? She’s among the finalists.
Heh.

Gama,
I wonder that, too. Their future isn’t bright if the enrollment continues to stagger. RIT/NTID have produced successful enrollment thus far and outnumbered Gallaudet’s enrollment #.
If Gallaudet goes down, all the schools (institutions) will go down. Gallaudet depends on institutions but since there’s several school closing gives a big bite on Gallaudet’s enrollment. I see it too late to change.

Look like Gallaudet next president will be hearing person. Hope I am 100% wrong.

Why the special treatment for Roz Rosen? You addressed her as Dr. and you didn’t for the other two, who also have doctorate degrees.

I don’t know about CSUN but the enrollment of deaf pupils at RIT/NTID have been rising but I’m curious how both compare with Gallaudet in terms of actual caliber. All three needs to be transparent in reporting hard data on their deaf/hh pupils.

Hi Amy,
Like in 2006, will the three fnalists present their speeches about their long-term goals for Gallaudet
this Wednesday, Sept. 3rd?
There were six finaists in 2006. First, the three candidates were seleted and the other three candidates were eliminated. So I wonder if there is any way for us to know now the names of the three eliminated ones SIX finalists. The reason for asking is that we learned the names of ALL six candidates supplied on the defunct website: http://www.gallypresidentwatch.com in April 2006.
Keep posting any new developed notices.
Merci beaucoup!

Gallaudet will change the time of the president finalist announcements. Protests have erupted on campus objecting to the time of day — professors object to having classes cancelled so students can attend the announcement. Why not have it during the lunch hour, is what campus constituents are screaming now.

Protests? Please. Not again.
The announcement will be recorded and available on the psac.Gallaudet.edu website any time people want to watch it.
This is a minor issue. PSAC has been very accommodating throughout the process.
Also, no one knows how many finalists will be announced tomorrow. Three? Four? Five? No one knows. The names of those NOT selected as finalists will NOT be released. Please respect their privacy.
Don’t feed rumors. Be patient. The announcement is coming. And the times for the presentations will be made tomorrow too.
Not everyone will be happy with the specific time of the announcement. So what? That’s no reason to “protest.” The process has been as transparent and professional as possible. Remember that the candidates are people too.
