We are not immune…

Amy Cohen Efron shares her thoughts about the tragedy occurred at Virginia Tech University resulting the loss of over 30 lives and injuring several people. Amy explains how we, the Deaf Community, are not immune from any kind of violence, depression, loneliness, ineffectiveness of safety preparedness, and the lack of access for counseling and mental health support. It may happen to us anytime and we must be proactive about it.

My deepest condolences to the Virginia Tech community.

I often wonder about this. Last year, there was a tidal wave warning for San Diego but I didn’t know about it until 45 minutes later since I was nowhere near a TV to see the scrolling text warning.

People are more mobile than ever and there should be a way to reach them all on their mobile devices/cellphones. I know that technology already exists, so it’s not a question of technology but a question of implementation.

I would gladly sign up for local warnings in my area if I knew where to go.

    Well done Amy!

My heart goes out to the family, friends and classmates of those lives are lost…

  3. Dave Says:

You signed “university”. It is not University. It should be Tech. School.

  4. abcohende Says:

    Dave,

According to my research of Virginia Tech’s website and it says:

“Virginia Tech is now a comprehensive, innovative research university with the largest full-time student population in Virginia.”

    So, it is an University.

    Thank you for your comment.

  5. John Egbert Says:

    Amy,

Yes, I am sure that many of us had a lot of thoughts about it too.

There are people that do solve their problems by hurting people.

And there are people that like to solve problems in a meaningful way to get the word across…like yourself Vlogging, myself writing books and many countless of other Deaf people right now trying to educate the society of who we are and what we need in intellectual ways.

I have other thoughts that could/may happen but I rather not say, and hope for the better.

We all are proactiving in a positive way so far in communication issues which is the underlining problems of many deaf citizens.

This Deafread.com Vlog/Blogging has done wonders to achieve our proactive attitudes that many don’t realize!

  6. Dianrez Says:

This morning the news announced a scary development at RIT. A hearing student was arrested for having two assault rifles in his room in a separate campus complex near RIT, but belonging to RIT.

Apparently a hearing custodian near the room heard a gun cock and recognized the sound, so reported it. A search turned up the guns and the student is now in custody on $15,000 bail. Guns are against campus rules and the student is now suspended as well as facing prosecution as assault rifles are illegal here.

This is worrisome, Amy. That we do not have adequate resources to identify and help the disturbed among us, and that we cannot protect the rest of our people from them as well as we would like to. A custodian might have saved people in this situation. Will the next custodian or alert person be in the right place next time?

  7. Johanna Says:

I agree with you..very sad…that true need support and help. God bless with them who 33 students. Now world crazy….I can’t believe make me sad and thought about how proactive. It is not EASY. TRUE!
    Thanks….

  8. Nick Vera Says:

Welcome back! Good to see you again on vlog. Indeed, that story mourns me since Monday especially the professor, who survived through the Holocaust, prevented his students and killed by the shooter. That was the most heartbreakening story. We can’t bring him back to live. My heart goes to the families, friends, and community at VA Tech.
As you bring up about Gallaudet University and RIT/NTID, I strongly recommend each universities and colleges provide the emergency preparedness every school year such as workshops and use incentive to reward something. That workshop will save our lives and endure support each other greatly.
Also for deaf community, we need to prepare ourselves with same kind of workshops to educate and to prepare for unexpectedably natural and unnatural disasters.

Thank you, Amy for your contribution to our community including Gallaudet and RIT/NTID among other universities/colleges with Deaf and HOH services.

Silent together for VA Tech. Amen!

    Dave,

I agreed with Amy’s comment about university. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a university level with technology and academic education as well as graduates of AOS, AAS, BS, MS, and PHD in each field where the students learn to study.

  11. Julie Rems-Smario Says:

Your vlog is a much needed discussion about proactiveness. While I hope this tragedy it will never happen to our Deaf community, it is an excellent idea to be prepared by learning from this sad incident. I appreciate you bringing this up.

Prayers with the people of VA Tech in my mind and heart,

    Julie

  12. drmzz Says:

Very tragic. My family and I talked about this. For anyone who is alone, please talk with someone and don’t keep it inside yourself. We need to talk this out and process and learn from this. Professors did see red flags from this guy (since 2004) and referred him for counseling. Further than that, I don’t know the details if he attended such sessions and took meds and follow-ups. One can’t look after him 24/7 in this country, but it’s unfortunate that he decided to do this once for all two weeks before his graduation. He was clearly dysfunctional. Like one person in the news said unforeseen and slight factors can set this guy off. Perhaps mandatory mental health counseling policies are to be implemented into place for such students before they are allowed to participate into classes. What I notice from VA Tech is majority of whites there and I don’t know if that imitates him. It goes back how his family raised him and the strong cultural expectations that he must achieve for his family. My university, SFSU is number one in diverse student body in the nation and perhaps, he’ll fare better here with his peers. We’ll never know. Yes, there are a lot of solitaires around on college campuses. University life is hard and you have to make something out of it otherwise you’ll lose out and end up alone cuz everyone have their own plans and pressures to deal with. Perhaps social interventions are needed to include the likes of him in activities, but what I’m seeing from the news, some tried, but this guy was very silent and anti-social unfortunately. Clearly he has issues that were not resolved from counseling or he was what he was, mentally ill. Good intentions for the person are often not successful. As for Gallaudet, word of mouth and pagers will get around fast. The biggest fear for Gallaudet is DPS and I don’t think that has been truly addressed and solved yet.

  13. ~Vikee Says:

    Well Done, AMY!

This whole thing strikes at my heart. Everytime something like this happens the first thing that comes to my mind….”Hope there were no deaf people there” Sigh….

One correction….32 people were killed, the 33rd person is the shooter.

Blessed be the parents and students at VaTech.

    Go Hokies!

  14. Jean Boutcher Says:

    Amy,

This is a profoundly and shockingly tragic story about the deadly shooting rampagne at Va. Tech. University last Monday. Because of 13 students being killed at Columbine eight years ago, I have since 1999 been a volunteer for Brady Campaign banning gun (we are having a march in the national mall with a banner, “Ban Gun.” This morning’s news revealed that the tragedy would not have happened had [1] the gun seller not sold guns to the student and [2] the teacher alerted to the counselor about the hate and aggressiveness in Cho Seung-Hui’s writings. From the media coverage have we come into full realisation that deaf people would be helpless should something like that happen at schools for the deaf and Gallaudet. We can help save deaf people if [1]
we have more signing counselors and DPS and [2]
we detect hate and aggressiveness of an individual.
Amy, I completely agree with you that we should be concerned about the lack of signing skills of people who work or teach deaf students. Therefore, we are
indebted to you for your vlog.

  15. Diane Says:

including a few professors not all 33 students. My prayer goes out to the families. Sigh … Diane

  16. browneyedgirl65 Says:

It is very difficult and troubling, since it sounds like some of his professors referred him to health and counseling services after reading some of his papers that he turned in. So people were aware he had a problem, it wasn’t completely ignored, and he still erupted into violence. I agree we all need to think about how to inform in case of emergency, and how to proactively address troubled individuals, it’s going to be a long process.

  17. daveynin Says:

    Jared,

You might want to try The Emergency Email & Wireless Network, to get notified from weather/disaster warnings, HOMELAND security, AMBER alerts specify on your zip code locally.

Been using this for 3 years with my pager, it wasn’t bad.

    http://www.emergencyemail.org

I don’t think it have nothing to do with college for emergencies.

  18. Mary Lou Says:

It is very sad to hear a lots of bad news .I feel sorry for VTech students, their parents and person who died. It awful!! But Im worrying abt Gallaudent College, Many Deaf Schools and RIT and other deaf colleges and I hope no one can shoot any deaf students. May God watching over all deaf students and our homeland deaf peoples. But I like to see best way is keep Security all deaf schools and Colleges to keep save all deaf students.
Thank Amy for good speech and Im very agree with you well.

  19. Raphael J. St. Johns Says:

Thank you Amy for your thoughts on this subject. I am at loss as why this happened.

In reading the various reports that are now coming out, I feel almost helpless. Appearently, the English department at Tech tried to get the shooter help. There is even a report that the police were notified of the shooter brizzare behavior over a year ago. Yet, no one picked up at any of this. I do’nt know what could have done that would have prevented this. I do know that if the shooter would have made a threat say, to harm a public official, it would have been taken more serouisely.

Perhaps, when all of this is over, we can start, as a society, to become more sensitive to the issue of mental health. For some reason, we tend to ignored real substance problems-until soemthing goes wrong somewhere.

We need to avoid doing that- the price we pay is often destructive- and begin a process where people who get help…get real help.

Clearly, something went wrong in this case. And we are paying a great price now.

    Raphael J. St. Johns C-87, G-00

  20. Mia Says:

My heart goes to them, hopefully these who’s had injuries get well and strong people. I remember when i was younger till graduated at Tennessee School for the Deaf, The drill for our school safety that for any purpose and Most of time we had false drill alarms. We made sure we must do prepare if something happens. You are right that make us NOT any easier. Anytime, Anywhere can happen.

  21. todos la vie Says:

    Hi Amy,
I notice you have made some vlogs projecting strong feelings. Sometimes, for me it could be counterproductive. I really like your matter of fact attitudes in some of your vlogs – the one about JFK and IKJ and The Greatest Irony. Anyway, we could look back and say we were immune to the AIDS virus. I remember those naive feelings, but as we grow older and wiser, we know that if we keep worrying about what could happen at the next minute, we would be living that minute.

  22. Ginny Paja-Nyholm Says:

    Amy-

Thank you countless times for bringing up the PROACTIVE issue. What we had gone through the past as a Deaf community, we change the negative experiences into the positive ones and utilize our minds, souls, and hearts to teach and help the others succeed via a variety of avenues such as writing, b/vlogging and outreach.

My prayers go out to the students, teachers, families and friends at Virginia Tech!

    -Ginny

  23. Oscar the Observer Says:

    Response here.

  24. IamMine Says:

    Thank you, Amy!

I know this isn’t the place to say this…but I find it irony that the man who loves to control by fear was there paying respect.

    That’s right – President Bush.

We live by fear, not so much by hope in this country – and President Bush hasn’t been exactly an ideal person.

It’s a tragic event…but how much more does it take?

Shooting in schools has been happening – even here that has not made the news.

We live in the box of fear. We don’t even trust our own neighbors – or even know them for that matter.

We get angry very easily. I’m guilty for that so don’t think I’m pointing at everyone else. I’m also the guilty party here.

People wonder how we came to this point… we are so busy pointing fingers at people with faults or our own ideas of how they should be.

    Air is first…and then humanity.

If only it were that simple…

It costs money to set up all the securities and preparations…but it does NOT cost anything to care about people.

Love really heals…but hatred is very easy to grow.

May those students/professor rest in peace and for their loved ones – I cannot say how sorry I am, nor do I know their pain but I grief along with them.

  25. Michele Says:

Amy, thanks for sharing it with us, you brought up some good issues.

I see that schools are suffering from the shootings, is it because the educational system is old and needs to be changed. Kids are often stressed out from taking tests in order for the state to get money and to keep their schools running. Therefore, schools are no longer a fun place to go and learn. It is like one has to study hard in order to pass and then poof with a diploma to get a job. Schools now do not make any sense. I thought after the Columbine incident, people would have started to take this seriously but I guess no one has any answers or are afraid of change.

I hope this VA Tech will have an effect on education and how we can make schools a much better place for our kids and to help them feel safe and appreciated and most of all, valued for themselves. Too many bullies are developing in schools, even though schools have imposed policies on how to reduce bullyness, still there are kids who bully others. I’m not quite sure why the shooter was very angry and depressed. Most Asian students are very high achieving and work very hard so the Asian community is quite shocked over this because it is a rarity that an Asian student would go on a shooting ramgage. I hope we will find answers to this and perhaps work to a solution for everyone involved from preschool to college level.

  26. the blue Says:

May I ask? What does Bush has to do with any of this? IamMine, what does Bush has to do with this? please expalin. Was he the shooter? No. was he responsible? No. Why did you have to bring politics into this terrible, horrible evnt?

  27. IamMine Says:

No, Bush doesn’t have anything to do with this event.

I simply was pointing out the irony of his presence, that’s all.

Politics is always involved with horrible events, unfortunately. It stinks, yeah.

I was derailing from the event itself and I apologize for that.

  28. KBJENSEN Says:

    hi Amy,

You are right! Are we ready at the residential school, Gallaudet University, RIT, CSUN, Mainstream program or any other educational setting for communicating lockdown??

I often wonder about this. And I am glad you mentioned this.

  29. matt Says:

well bush and rnc have not been helpful with the gun control debate..from my perspective, they do bore part of blame.

text pagers are not enough. deaf people must now demand for radar system, metal detectors, dick tracy wristwatch, etc
    we need more..now

to be extra safe, we should carry first aid kits in our backpacks.
    yeah that is proactive..what else?

  30. Joshua Says:

whoa A LOT PEOPLE comments now. honest with u when u talk about VA TECH. happened breaking news and last night i watch tv news found out about VA TECH it’s impact my mind to thinking a lot thing IMAGINE i have experience practice lockdown at SCSDB (SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND THE BLIND) it’s SCARED me out of the hell. ALL OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS not know just suprise one day show up gunman with fake gun as toy gun with balls. i heard SO LOUD door slams, runs, voices so high i was sit by the door which is hall. i was shocked. that’s make me thinking of SCSDB need get improved if students outside just walking to other building not know it’s lockdown it’s make me thinking ALL NIGHT can’t sleep at all! till final sleep NOON after i awoke up i still thinking about it. i want go to SCSDB discuss about more idea for MORE SAFE for deaf people and blind. of course Blinds can heard but i mean DEAF need more improved. but my idea why not set have ummm i not know what called it as pay phone place look like it but Galluadent have kind of CALLED POLICE as u know what i mean? i am not sure what called it as have BLUE light top so people will know it’s WARNING or something. same thing problem with tornado or several warning need improve drill stuff like that. thank for bring it up i wish i have Video so i can make Videoclip make clear and more discuss. that’s all i can to say my mind have a lot many thing going on about it. keep up with ur videoclip.

  31. Concerned Says:

It is interesting to observe that many schools have seen a lot of violence & shootings in the last decade. Is it because school prayer is banned? Schools seemed to be a lot safer back in the old days when school prayers were allowed & standard! God would offer His protection to us when we acknowledge His existence! Just an interesting thought to consider!

  32. IamMine Says:

Concerned – no it has nothing to do with prayer being banned.

Look at the rising of sales in games on violence, sex everywhere, anger in the air, and parents working their asses off with two incomes in deep debt and barely making it…all the while cost of living has skyrocketed with little or no pay raise to keep up with the inflation.

Kids are more holed up in their houses than kids in the old days… hooked to computers and video games.

Teachers are outnumbered with more students in classrooms. Kids now days have medications for various reasons and the old system of school just doesn’t do it anymore.

It has to change – everything has to change, especially in education.

Throw out the Leave No Child Behind Law or change it. Kids are tested to death…and frankly that law has been abused from what I’ve witnessed.

So many things we need to do and it’s now. Especially for our deaf/hoh children.

    The time is NOW.

  33. Concerned Says:

    To IamMine:

Well, I have to disagree completely with you about banning school prayers. You keep referring how the educational system has deteriorated along with the elements of our society. It is because many people have abandoned Christianity. Therefore, that is why everything is going in a senseless direction these days to the point where we can’t understand how it would happen in the first place! We should place our trust in God to help take care of our burdens rather than letting ourselves try to resolve everything! But I thank you for your opinion even if I can’t agree w/ it!

  34. White Ghost Says:

    Well said, Amy.

    Any thoughts, Candance Mc C.?

  35. kira Says:

amy, thanks for the amazing vlog…
prayers with the people of VA Tech in my mind and heart too…sign

  36. ASL Risen Says:

    Hello Amy!

I agreed with your thoughts because I was heart broken for VA Tech community! I got so upset to find out that St. Louis was hosting NRA (National Rifle Assoc)’s Annual Meetings and Exhibits over the weekend April 12-15. They urged us to vote and support for the MO House Bill 462 and the MO Senate Bill 62 is now on pending!

It made me so sick and worried for all USA college campuses with no gun control! I do not even understand why the court and the police knew that Cho was troubled in 2005 by assualting 2 women! Sighs.

  37. The blues Says:

To Matt and Iammine and all-

Let get one thing stright here: The NRA and Bush had nothing to do with this horrible event. AND shame on you for intruoucing politics here. 32 innocent persons were murdered in cold blood-and you guys think about politics?

For the record: I am a gun-control freak. But this is NOT the time nor the place to be argueing about politics.

  38. IamMine Says:

    Excuse me, the blues.

Where do you come off telling me that I was being inconsiderate of the 32 innocent people?

There ARE many factors that happened that caused this event and YES politics has had its influence on it.

    Shame on me? Oy!

I am a mother of FOUR children…so don’t come and scold at me.

Cold blood murders do not just happen out of the “blues” – politics, environment, education, and personal issues are some of the factors we have to consider.

I’m not disrespecting those 32 murdered people, but respecting by discussing about the politics and factors that took their lives.

NRA is very well known for taking advantages of the tragics – remember the Columbia shooting? They showed up in the area to promote it the very NEXT day.

Same thing with the shooting of a six years old girl here in Detroit – they showed up the following weekend!!

If anything at all – it’s a PERFECT time to argue about those issues!

    Shame on ME?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. The blues Says:

YES shame on you— the dead have not even been bury yet-and you go on talking about politics???????????

IT IS NOT the right time –let’s talk about politics whenevr they open classes, for example( next week).

This is not the time for placing fault.

It is a time for morning. …and grieving.

  40. The blues Says:

And yes- I know about the NRA. I have been a target of that group for a long time- they know who I am . They (NRA) hate me…but I refuse to use this horrible, inhume murders for any political capital.

  41. IamMine Says:

Okay, I am not going to further embarrass myself here with someone who has a theory of timeline permitted before applying the “shame on you” statement on a person.

I also grieve with those people – as a parent and concerned citizen.

But you are partially right – shame on me…for caring.

  42. Jackie Says:

Amy, Thank you for put this… This is sad to see horrible events… My Heart go out to VA Tech community. did already happen to few School and already happen to two Job sites in the past…
Could happen anywhere…We all have to watch out Our back and Have a Faith…We need stop get Gun or put strict laws on the Gunbecause Gun is NOT answer solve in the life. We need teach us to be Postive attitude toward the People of Life because We are the Difference people…My Thought and Prayer go to VA Tech Community.

  43. abcohende Says:

    Blues and IamMine,

First, let’s us try to focus on the issue about how can we be proactive with this current situation. We, deaf people and the community is not immune to terrible violence, mental health issues, and safety issues… and I know it is an emotional time for all of us and we are seeking for answers to understand this senseless situation.

Many mass shootings done by one person or two, always end up killing themselves. We will never know why they want to do that. We only can learn from what they wrote, their previous experiences, background, etc… but I wish what caused them to ’snap’ and how can we help to prevent this kind of ’snap’.

Thank you for trying to keep the topic about proactiveness.

    Amy Cohen Efron

  44. The blues Says:

yes- shame on you… because if you really cared.. then you should not evne been talking about politcis here-good heavens, the dead have not been buried yet! like I said before- wait until next week or some other time!

And Amy- I respectfully disagree with you here. Let’s focus on the sufferings of a community- we will have plenty of time later to come up with solutions to our Deaf community problems.

  45. Lisa Says:

Found out from the Newstarget.com that the shooter in the VT rampage was taking anti-depressant drugs. And so were the shooters at Columbine High School 8 years ago.

  46. Orchid Says:

It is very important not to be in a bullying, mocking, and undecent group or gang against anyone. If anyone is different than most people, it would never be the right thing to mock or being cruel to him.
So you who is in the group, gang or clan, have to be careful and kind to anyone who is different from you all. Since what I typed in error, it can’t be corrected here so excuse me for some errors.
    thank you

  47. Annie Says:

During school period, don’t make fun of loner, silent students. Don’t bully the reluctant ones who can’t speak out in classroom. They are innocent becuz they were born with it. Don’t blame them. They may come from lousy parents or no parents or whoever who don’t encourage them at all. Please respect any of geek, speechless, low-mind children alone. Please cooperate of this. Thanks.

  48. DCABlogs Says:

Just FYI, Gallaudet already have system prepare for any emergency how they inform student and community is that they have alert where it will send to your pager/email etc. then we spread words around so fast thats how it works at Gallaudet. Also, Gallaudet Mental Health has contact VA Tech offer their service to any of Deaf students that are there. Nice of them!

  49. Barb DiGi Says:

    Hi Amy,

You got us feeling and thinking! It is surely rambling my emotions and thoughts!

First of all, I want to express my deepest sympathy for the victims and their families. It is the worse tradegy in history of the mass shooting on an educational campus.

Secondly, that’s where you got us thinking..it can happen anywhere.

You had asked about how can the message can get across to students about the lockdown. As Karen had explained, RSD is not exactly located in a friendly safe neighborhood making increased security and system necessary.

In every classroom, we have a message board. We experienced a lockdown last fall that we immediately locked our rooms and that the perpetrator was not able to get in the building. This type of communication system was effective where we were all informed simultaneously.

Thirdly, we need to re-evaluate the availability and quality of counseling service for the deaf. I believe that it is more difficult for the deaf to receive proper service and that is the main concern.

As we bow down our heads with grieve, may the families find their ways to heal.

  50. Rob Walker Says:

    Amy

Excellent thoughts on this situation. One of the things that has bothered me for a long time pertains to the radio in cars. In spite of the increasing number of deafies using mobile devices as a means of communicaton and news, there ARE still quite a few out there who do not have access to them. In this case, just suppose there was a lockdown at an university or school (either deaf or a public school with a deaf program) while the high school/ college student was on their way to classes. They would have no way of catching the latest bullentin sent out via radio news. As advanced as technology has become, it would be a advantage to us if a way was found to utilize the car radio. Not necessarily just for lockdowns and dangerous situations in an educational setting but can also include sudden weather and traffic warnings.

I digress a bit here.. I agree wholeheartily with you on the concern regarding couseling services for the deaf. To the best of my knowledge, there is no such service here in Arkansas that is readily available for the deaf community here – unless an interp is used (and who wants to spill their guts in the presence of a third party, regardless of their skill level?)

This not only concentrates on the depression aspect but also pertains to drug abuse and alcoholism – often hand in hand with depression. Again, because of the communication issues involved, many deafies end up not seeking treatment via AA, drug rehab, etc.

But then, this is a problem we all already aware of.

As ever, you made good points

    RFW

  51. BobbyBear Says:

    Amy,

My dear friend! you made me cry to watch your vlog as my niece is a junior student at VA Tech and she was there when it was happened. She walked into her sorority house from her dorm when the shooting went off and she was lockdowned at sorority house. She lost her one Sorority sister from shooting.
When I found out from the internet news on very same day, I emailed her with my blackberry and prayed to hear from her. I talked with my mom and my brother who is a father of his first child. I then received my niece’s email, I was so relief she was okay. She is remaining to stay in school to finish this semester. She is brave enough to go back in one more year to get her degree next year. She got plenty of support from her friends and family. I checked out on her to be sure she is okay and so far she is fine and move on with her life.

Then my sister in law wanted to set up the FAMILY HOTLINE and I told her it would be the best to do with cellphone along with text msg/email. whole 30 members of my family agreed wih us. I also did signed up the local news for my pager to know what the warning will be in San Diego County where I live.

  52. Mateo Says:

    Hi Amy,

I agree with you. I like to talk you about this. How we can talk VP, AIM, or email?

    Thanks,
